Action Sports Surf School is a full-service surf school offering lessons for all levels, from first-time beginners to advanced surfers. Since 1996, we’ve helped thousands of students learn to surf and gain confidence in the ocean. More than just technique, we teach a deep respect for the sea, for surfing culture, and for the traditions passed down through generations of wave riders.

Our Location: Maui’s South Shore Marine Park

We teach in a stunning 20-acre marine park on Maui’s south shore—one of the best environments for beginner and intermediate surfers alike. With multiple surf breaks to suit varying conditions, this location gives our instructors the flexibility to choose the best wave zone for your session based on the day’s swell, wind, and tides.

Boards & Gear: Safe, High-Quality Equipment

We provide top-quality soft-top epoxy surfboards that are safe, buoyant, and perfect for learning. With a variety of board sizes on hand, we help you select the right board based on your height, weight, skill level, and the conditions that day. We also include protective booties for reef safety and rash guards for comfort—so you can focus on learning and having fun.

Instructors: In the Water With You

Our hardworking, knowledgeable instructors are right there in the water with you, offering encouragement, guidance, and real-time coaching. They teach ocean etiquette, share local surf wisdom, and help you stay safe while learning proper form and technique. Their goal is to help you progress quickly while building a positive and lasting relationship with the ocean.

With the right instruction, you can be standing and riding waves on your very first day. Most students who take lessons with us on Maui’s south shore are up and riding within a single session—and always with a smile.

Tailored Coaching for All Levels

Beginners learn to paddle, pop up, and control their board in knee- to waist-deep water with soft, rolling waves. Intermediate surfers work on trimming, carving, and reading wave patterns for better timing and longer rides. We also offer multiday surf courses and skill-building programs designed to help you progress rapidly and confidently.

Intermediate Lessons – Surfing 201

Once you’ve mastered the basics in Surfing 101, our Surfing 201 course takes you to the next level. These sessions dive deeper into wave mechanics, timing, and positioning—giving you the tools to catch more waves, ride them longer, and increase your confidence in more challenging conditions.

Advanced Sessions – Private Surfari (Advanced Only)

Advanced surfers can join our private Surfari adventure—an exclusive guided trip to Maui’s lesser-known, uncrowded surf spots. These sessions are ideal for confident surfers looking to explore hidden breaks, challenge themselves, and experience Maui’s surf beyond the public beaches. Surfari is available by reservation only and is limited to experienced surfers.

Real Ocean Training—Not a Pool

All of our lessons take place in real ocean conditions. We don’t use artificial pools or wave machines. Instead, we teach you how to navigate shorebreaks, currents, reefs, and tides in one of the most beautiful and dynamic surfing environments on Earth. This hands-on experience prepares you to surf confidently, anywhere in the world.

Surfing Safely with Local Insight

Our instructors prioritize safety in every lesson. You’ll learn about riptides, reef safety, board control, and surf etiquette. We make sure every student knows how to protect themselves and others in the water. This focus on safety, combined with our instructors’ deep local knowledge, ensures a comfortable, respectful, and empowering surfing experience.

Flexible Session Options

We offer a range of formats to fit your schedule and learning style. Group sessions are great for friends or families who want to learn together, while semi-private and private lessons offer a more personalized learning environment. Sessions typically run 2 to 2.5 hours and are held in the morning when the waves are cleaner and the wind is light.

Surfboard Rentals (Experienced Surfers Only)

Already have some experience? We offer same-day surfboard rentals in a variety of sizes. However, for safety reasons, we do not rent surfboards to beginners. If you’ve never surfed before, you’ll need to book a lesson first to ensure proper safety and ocean awareness.
